PTSD is an increasingly common mental health condition among first responders

Recent statistics suggest that post-traumatic stress disorder is experienced by approximately one-third of the first responder community in some form. PTSD can manifest itself differently in each case but often manifests through symptoms such as intrusive thoughts and memories, flashbacks, nightmares, depression and hyper vigilance. It is important that agencies take steps to promote PTSD awareness among first responders and provide them with adequate care resources to support a healthy recovery process.

TESTIMONIALS

“Valerie, I am sitting in my sunroom this morning as I now start each day with some coffee and “Tim Time” and I was thinking about where I was a year ago at this time. I had a lot of anger and really wasn’t enjoying much. After starting medication and with your counseling help, I now find myself in a much more peaceful life and the advice you gave me. My life has changed for the better (much better), and I can’t thank you enough for the help you gave me. You are a special person and I wish there was an army of Valeries to be able to counsel us firefighters. It would have been so nice and a great asset to have someone to regularly discuss issues with throughout my career. Thank you! Thanks to the help that you have given me and thanks for being the person you are! You have helped me improve my life!”

“Don’t have enough words to explain how wonderful she was. Loved her no BS approach and she validated so much of what we see. Our role is a big deal, and our boys do hard things. It’s nice to know help is out there. Loved talking about actionable steps to take if we notice something.”
